Hozhonigo Institute ("Hozhonigo Institute," "we," "us," or "our") operates the public website available at www.tribalfunding.org (the "Site"). We are committed to protecting the privacy of the Tribal Nations, Native-led organizations, professionals, funders, and other visitors who engage with our work.

This Website Privacy Policy explains what information we collect through the Site, how we use and disclose it, and the choices available to you.

This Policy applies to the public Site, including its newsletter forms, contact and invitation requests, event and educational-program registrations, surveys, resource downloads, and other public-facing features. It does not apply to accounts or activity within the Tribal Funding Registry database at registry.tribalfunding.org, including Registry searches, Aiyana prompts, filters, bookmarks, or account activity. Those activities are governed by the separate Tribal Funding Registry Privacy Policy made available through the Registry.

By using the Site, you acknowledge the practices described in this Policy.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information You Provide

We may collect information you voluntarily provide when you:

  • subscribe to newsletters or email updates;

  • register for webinars, office hours, trainings, workshops, or other events;

  • ask us to participate in an event or presentation;

  • contact us with a question, request, or feedback;

  • request educational support, information, or a referral;

  • complete a survey or provide a testimonial;

  • download or request a resource; or

  • otherwise submit information through the Site.

This information may include your name, email address, phone number, job title, professional role, organizational affiliation, Tribe or Tribal affiliation, the Native communities your organization serves, event preferences, and any other information you choose to provide.

Please do not submit confidential, legally privileged, proprietary, or highly sensitive personal information through general Site forms unless we specifically request it and explain why it is needed.

2.2 Information Collected Automatically

When you visit the Site, we and service providers acting on our behalf may automatically collect certain technical and usage information, including:

  • IP address;

  • browser type and version;

  • device type and operating system;

  • pages viewed and time spent on the Site;

  • links clicked and resources accessed;

  • referring website or source;

  • approximate location derived from an IP address;

  • dates and times of visits; and

  • error, security, and performance information.

We may collect this information using cookies, pixels, web beacons, local storage, log files, and similar technologies. The Site may use Squarespace Analytics and Google Analytics to help us understand traffic, performance, and how visitors interact with the Site.

2.3 Information Processed Through Third-Party Services

The Site is hosted through Squarespace. Newsletter subscription forms and email communications may be processed through Mailchimp. We may also use event-registration, video, survey, scheduling, file-hosting, or form providers when a Site feature requires them.

These providers may collect or process information on our behalf to deliver the requested function. Some embedded content or links may also allow a third party to collect information under its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review any third-party notice presented when you use an embedded tool or leave the Site.

2.4 Information from Other Sources

We may receive information from event partners, referral sources, publicly available professional or organizational sources, or other people who reasonably believe you would be interested in Hozhonigo Institute's work. We use such information only for legitimate organizational purposes and consistent with applicable law.

3. How We Use Information

We may use information collected through the Site to:

  • provide requested information, resources, or support;

  • manage newsletter subscriptions and other communications;

  • register and communicate with participants in webinars, office hours, trainings, workshops, and events;

  • respond to invitations, questions, and feedback;

  • administer surveys and evaluate programs;

  • understand the reach and use of the Site;

  • improve Site content, navigation, accessibility, performance, and security;

  • communicate about Hozhonigo Institute and Tribal Funding Registry programs, events, resources, impact, fundraising, and partnership opportunities, consistent with your choices and applicable law;

  • develop de-identified or aggregated reporting about audiences, needs, engagement, and impact;

  • prevent spam, fraud, abuse, unauthorized activity, or security threats;

  • enforce our Website Terms and Conditions; and

  • comply with legal obligations and protect rights, safety, and integrity.

We do not use information collected through the Site for targeted advertising based on activity across unrelated websites or services.

4. How We Disclose Information

We do not sell or rent personal information. We do not disclose personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

We may disclose information in the following limited circumstances:

  • Service providers: We may provide information to vendors that support website hosting, forms, analytics, email delivery, event registration, scheduling, surveys, file delivery, security, and other operational functions. These providers may process information only as needed to perform services for us and are expected to protect it.

  • Event or program partners: If an event or program is co-hosted, we may share registration or participation information with the identified partner when reasonably necessary to administer it. We will provide notice or request consent when appropriate.

  • Legal, safety, and integrity purposes: We may disclose information when we reasonably believe disclosure is required by law, legal process, or a valid governmental request, or is necessary to protect rights, safety, security, or the integrity of the Site.

  • Organizational transactions: If Hozhonigo Institute is involved in a merger, reorganization, transfer of a program or assets, or similar transaction, information may be transferred subject to appropriate protections.

  • With your direction or consent: We may disclose information when you direct us to do so or provide consent, including when you authorize a testimonial or other attribution.

  • De-identified or aggregated information: We may share statistics or reports that cannot reasonably be linked to a particular person, Tribe, or organization.

5. Email and Communication Choices

If you subscribe to a newsletter or other promotional communication, we may send the content you requested along with related updates about programs, events, resources, fundraising, or partnerships. You may unsubscribe from promotional email at any time by using the unsubscribe link or contacting community@tribalfunding.org.

We may still send nonpromotional messages necessary to respond to an inquiry, administer an event for which you registered, provide a requested resource, or address a legal or security matter.

6. Cookies and Similar Technologies

The Site may use:

  • Essential cookies, which support security and core website functions;

  • Functional cookies, which remember settings and preferences;

  • Analytics cookies, which help us understand traffic, engagement, and performance; and

  • Campaign-measurement technologies, which help us understand whether a communication or outreach effort directed visitors to the Site.

We do not use Site cookies to serve targeted advertisements. Where a cookie preference tool is available, you can use it to manage nonessential technologies. You can also adjust your browser settings to block or delete cookies. Blocking some cookies may limit Site functions.

Because browser and device signals vary, the Site may not respond to every "Do Not Track" signal. We will honor legally required browser-based opt-out signals when applicable to our practices.

7. Tribal Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance

Hozhonigo Institute recognizes that information connected to Tribal Nations, Native communities, and Native-led organizations carries responsibilities beyond ordinary data administration. We seek to manage information collected through the Site in a manner that respects Tribal sovereignty and Indigenous data governance principles.

Accordingly:

  • we do not sell or commercialize Tribe-specific or Tribal-affiliation information;

  • we do not provide funders, advertisers, or researchers with identifiable information about a person's or organization's funding interests without permission;

  • we limit the collection and use of Tribal affiliation and Tribe-specific information to legitimate organizational purposes;

  • we use reasonable measures to prevent aggregated or de-identified reports from identifying a person, Tribe, or organization indirectly, especially where a group or community is small; and

  • requests involving Tribe-specific data may require additional consultation or authorization when appropriate.

8. Third-Party Links, Social Media, and the Registry

The Site may link to the Tribal Funding Registry, funders, government agencies, application portals, social-media platforms, videos, event tools, consultants, and other third-party websites or services. We do not control and are not responsible for their content, security, accessibility, or privacy practices.

When you leave the Site or use an embedded third-party feature, review the applicable privacy notice before providing personal information.

Registry accounts and activity at registry.tribalfunding.org are governed by the separate Tribal Funding Registry Privacy Policy, even when you reach the Registry by selecting a link on this Site.

9. Data Retention

We retain personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, including responding to requests, administering communications or events, evaluating programs, maintaining security and organizational records, complying with law, and resolving disputes. Retention periods vary based on the type of information and why it was collected.

If you unsubscribe, we may retain limited information necessary to honor the opt-out and maintain appropriate records. When information is no longer needed, we take reasonable steps to delete, de-identify, or securely dispose of it. Some information may remain temporarily in backups, security logs, or records we must retain for legal or legitimate operational purposes.

10. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Your Rights and Choices

Subject to applicable law and appropriate identity verification, you may ask us to:

  • provide access to personal information we maintain about you;

  • correct inaccurate or incomplete information;

  • delete personal information;

  • provide a portable copy of certain information, when reasonably available;

  • restrict or object to certain uses; or

  • withdraw consent when processing is based on consent.

To make a request, email community@tribalfunding.org. We may need to verify your identity or authority and clarify the scope of the request. We will respond within the period required by applicable law. If we cannot fulfill a request, we will explain the reason when required and appropriate.

12. State and Other Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live and whether a particular privacy law applies to Hozhonigo Institute or the Site, you may have additional rights. We will honor legally required rights and may choose to honor reasonable requests even when a particular law does not apply.

We do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right protected by applicable law.

13. Children's Privacy

The Site is intended for a general professional and organizational audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the Site, contact community@tribalfunding.org so we can review and, when appropriate, delete it.

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy to reflect changes to the Site, our practices, or applicable requirements. We will post the revised Policy and update the "Last Updated" date. If a change materially affects how we use or disclose personal information, we may provide additional notice through the Site, by email, or by another appropriate method.
